Housing and Habitat Introduction

Housing and Habitat-

This was the first year of joining the Housing and Habitat service group, I have been in other service groups like Gecko Inc. and RCCI where I have been mainly interacting and teaching children or students from local schools. I first experienced what the service group Homerun does through Week Without Walls in grade 10 when we had to go to the Janoda Foundation in Hambantota and help teach children in the foundation and also help fix fences and plant trees. I had a really good experience being in the Week Without Walls trip as I was able to interact with others through teaching and also being active by fixing fences, carrying tree trunks and digging holes to plant trees. It was a really good experience and I really wanted to join a service group where I could help and interact with others while helping our local community, and I really liked doing manual labor as its place where I can use my excessive energy.

Housing and Habitat for a long time have been building furniture for the Janoda Foundation and creating fundraisers like Homerun to be able to make tables and chairs. Last year, I had heard from my peers that all they were doing were breaking down pallets of wood which took so long so that they could make furniture. I was excited to be part of the Housing and Habitat service group and be able to aim to finish creating the tables and chairs for the Janoda Foundation.
