This year the first event hosted by the SGA (Student Government Association) was the Haunted House for the primary students. As this was also my first year as a grade rep, I learned a lot about decision making, organization etc.

Setting up the curtains and the candles

One of the few decisions we had to make was to figure out who we are hosting. We decided upon the primary group as they tend to be the most receptive to Halloween festivities. Another important factor was the time of the event and the price. We needed it to be priced low enough so that everyone could afford the Haunted House, but simultaneously we needed the price high enough to make a profit (we had spent a bit of our budget on decorations), as the purpose of this haunted house was to be a fundraiser. Moreover, we needed it to be a time when parents could also easily access the house, as a lot of primary kids weren’t comfortable going in alone or even with friends.

Regarding organization, we had to collectively agree upon a time to come together to set-up the haunted house, and this was surprisingly difficult due to the fact that the SGA is composed of people in different grades, with different extra-curricular activities, and thus conflicting schedules. Nonetheless, we arranged a time suitable for all of us, and set it up on time.

We also had to allocate roles to the people actually in the Haunted House, along with organizational roles. For example, I was collecting money and ensuring no one went in more than once without paying accordingly. Similarly, there were people in the Haunted House who were monitoring the kids to see if they were comfortable enough, and on the off chance they cried or expressed the need to get out quickly, said people would guide them accordingly.

Arranging all of this was quite an experience, and I addressed a lot of learning outcomes from these. These outcomes include the CAS learning outcome 5, as I actively collaborated with a multitude of people. Furthermore, I also addressed learning outcome 7, as I had to make a bunch of decisions and plan accordingly. Moreover, I also addressed learning outcome 2, as participating in a Haunted House, and the SGA was a completely new endeavour.
