Every year OSC celebrates UN Day or the United Nations Day, this is the day in OSC where every student in the school comes dressed in their countries traditional clothes. Every year there are different themes that are discussed, for example, last year was the theme about Renewable Energy and this year the theme was Gender Equality. UN Day also includes lunch with foods across the world which the parents usually make, a class discussion on the theme and UN Day Assembly with other activities, usually they have flag arcades where I get to hold the Japanese flag being the oldest Japanese in the school. However, this year the school did not include the flag parade at the start so I was a bit disappointed about it.
This year, UN day was really stressful as the DP 1 economics and geography classes had to create a presentation and present it to the rest of the secondary school on UN Day on the theme of gender equality. I was put in the group that had to teach the grades 9-10 and the sub-topic was equal pay for females. I was partnered up with Junsu and we had to present for 2 hours, talking about possible solutions that can be implied, some facts about the amount of money females are being paid in average, how many females are working in government offices, what countries are taking action and which countries have a strict law against equal rights, and etc. The experience of teaching and discussing the topic of equal pay for females was a good experience as I don’t take up the role of leadership that often as I am stage fright, so being able to take a position being a leader was a good experience overall.
