On the 3rd of February, members of Eco-schools decided to do a cleanup around the area which surrounds the school. At 3.30 pm we all met and divided ourselves into 2 groups- one group walked down the road and one-up the road.

This was a good opportunity to see and clean the ton of garbage lying around the area. There were a significant amount of glass bottles, beer cans, single-use plastics such as spoons, plates, yogurt cups…

We made it a point to separate the garbage into 3 black bags- plastic, cloth, glass which would be taken for recycling afterward. However, the 3 bags became 6. There was so much garbage.

Since we had only one hour for service from 3.30-4.30 pm, we ended the cleanup by 4.15 pm. The cleanup made me cautious about the waste generated by common households and schools in Sri Lanka and I believe that all of us recalled the importance to do weekly cleanups around our neighborhood and school to reduce, recycle the waste generated.
