The Garden Bed Project was merely a proposal that had been put forward to help our school become more self-sufficient and greener. As months went by the Eco-Team comprised of Eco-Schools, Housing and Habitat, and Recycling and Sustainability were keen to build gardens at different locations around the school which would primarily help increase the self-sufficiency of the school and would also contribute to the appearance of the school. The first meeting was held with the Head of facilities, the architect, and other staff members along with leaders and members of Housing and Habitat and Recycling and Sustainability to discuss how we could build long-term eco-friendly garden beds around the school. We had meetings every week to talk through any issues or updates concerning this project.

An important topic that was discussed was the type of materials that were going to be used. We reached a consensus that building the beds with red brick would be better than using plastic pots which could split easily and are knocked over frequently. Members of Housing and Habitat were willing to help build the beds which covered the labor required. But, we got professional help to guide the build too.

After gaining approval from the Head of the School, we set dates to build the 4 proposed garden beds. On the 3rd, 5th, and 12th of November Housing and Habitat built 2 out of the 4 garden beds.

This is an ongoing project and we still have two more garden beds to complete. The garden beds look pretty amazing thanks to all who made it possible! 🙂
