The Overseas School of Colombo celebrated the United Nations day on the 4th of October 2019. UN day is a special day to OSC as it celebrates the diversity in our school and supports the mission statement of our school which is ‘Unity in Diversity’. On this day, we get the opportunity to express our own nations and cultures as shown in the pictures above. However, the best part of UN day is the food! where we can taste food from all around the world. The theme of this year’s UN day is Gender Equality which is an important global issue that people are dealing with now a days.

Class of 2021 – UN Day

For UN day, the DP1 Geography and Economics students were asked to work with COMUN members in order to create presentations for secondary school students on the UN day’s theme of the SDG Gender Equality. We were divided into groups and my group was assigned to present Gender Equality but specifically on Education for grades 6 and 7. We made a presentation that suites the audience by making it easier for them to understand and more interactive than informational, by getting them to introduce themselves, write on posters, come up with a performance, watch a video and do Quizlet.

My group and I thought that it would be very challenging to control grade 6 and 7 since they get distracted easily, but actually it turned out really well as they were very respectful, ready to learn and share their own thoughts on this topic. They all participated and answered all questions asked by us. Overall by doing this, we did not only teach them but we also learnt new information related to this topic and this was an opportunity for us as students to improve our communication and leadership skills.
