UN Day 2019 Celebration

UN Day 2019 Celebrations

The UN 2019 celebrated the SDG Goals, which comprised 17 goals that were made after the millennium goals, which finish in 2015. The new SDG goals are hoped to be completed by 2030. This year we focused on SDG goal 5 which was Gender Equality.

My goal this year was to organize and present a presentation on Gender Inequality and more specifically on Gender Violence and Human Trafficking.  Harin and I had to plan an hour and a half presentation which was informative to the DP 1 and Dp 2s.  What Harin and I decided to do was start off with charades/ skits to start off with. the Skits involved 2 roles one that people would stereotypically associate with a male and one that with a female in a situation eg. Maid and Head house. We wouldn’t state which was a male or female and we just wanted to see how they play the skit just to test how they assign gender roles to different Jobs.

To our surprise, everyone was very gender neutral which was very good for us because we had a very knowledgeable and unbias class. Then we proceeded to give statistics and what exactly are the biggest issues in gender inequality in this world which were a number of issue even with the number of strides that the world has taken.

There is still a lot of gender violence in the majority of countries, especially in the middle east. Even though we are not physically stopping that violence and the simple act of more people knowing the issues will lead to fewer and fewer people doing it as there is more awareness of the issue.

Finally, we asked people in our classroom to split up into groups of 2 to 3 people to produce posters. We assigned each group a different NGO that is currently trying to make a difference in this world in regards to gender inequality. Which I think is the best way for students to learn and understand the issues as they are themselves researching and understanding the issue rather than a teacher or me just spewing facts and statistics at them.
