The One with SAISA: Girls’ Volleyball 2018

Volleyball season started on August 13th, 2018. I participated in the volleyball practices last year, however did not try out for the SAISA team. This year, although, I unfortunately did not make the team, however, I continued to attend practices for majority of the season and gave each of them my all.

I began the season determined to make the team and represent OSC at the SAISA Girls Volleyball Tournament of the year, and that was my goal. However, as the season progressed, my determination did not change but my goal did. I understood that there was more to this sport than just being a good spiker, setter or server. It was that you had to be an excellent communicator. Sometime that volleyball has, which makes it unique to other ball sports, is that it is not a contact sport. Meaning that you are surrounded by your allies and not your opposition, unlike sports like football and basketball (which I am experienced and familiar with due to other SAISAs I have participated in).

And since communication was the greatest skill you can possess in volleyball, I decided that I wanted that to be my new goal and learning outcome. And this was something that I did achieve by the end of the season, which I was very proud of. I was able to be an effective communicator which subsequently made me work collaboratively with my teammates. I was able to identify which balls I was responsible for, when to call for help, how to collaborate with the setter and how to react and receive to specific passes.

Overall, I am very impressed and happy with my progress throughout the season and I am looking forward to next year.
