The One with Prep Rally: Season 1

At OSC, prep rallies are school assemblies that celebrate and cheer on our SAISA sports teams prior to the tournament. We have one prep rally per a season, meaning there are 3 prep rallies each year. However, these not only celebrate sportive accomplishments, but also events such as SAISA Music, Art and ISTA.

My service group, GeckoNetwork, is a service that documents all events and activities of the school. We service the OSC community, and publish all photography and videography on our website: www.osc.lk/gecknet

This season, I was responsible for making the SAISA Girls Volleyball team video for the prep rally. I had 4 weeks to do this, however, I had to compromise film times with the other members of the service as all the SAISA sports practices happen at the same time. So, I had about 3 sessions to film, which is about 6 hours of footage.

When filming, I worked by myself for the first 2 sessions. Both of these sessions ended in victory of our home team. However, the 3rd session, I worked with Vinuda on a Saturday practice, and I found this was very helpful. The remaining footage of the video was filmed by Jiwon and Karla using a GoPro during practice. The GoPro was attached to their chest using a harness and we managed to get multiple players-view shots, sets, hits, and dives.

I was also expected to take pictures of the Boys and Girls games and practices, which can be found on: https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1Tek5VXGaAeQCvX1QC2xdkK0Pb7L3359V

This Prep Rally, 2 learning outcomes I felt I had accomplished successfully were:

  • Planned and initiated activities

For this project, I had to organize with the other service members in my group when each of us could film because there was a clash between all the practices and it meant we had to compromises. Additionally, my group and I, I had to plan out what exactly we would want to film and the type of shots we were looking for as freestyling the creation of a video is not an appropriate approach as a videographer. So, to prior to making the video, we decided on a song (Unstoppable by the Score) and what type of shots we would want for beat drops and certain lyrics.

  • Worked collaboratively with others:

I had to work with my group members, Karla and Jiwon, when planning out the video and making decisions such as the type of shots we wanted and the background music. I also had to work with the Girls Volleyball team as there is a part of the video that consists of individual shots and that required me to communicate efficiently to the team about exactly what to do.
