The One with SAISA Event Crew: Girls’ Volleyball 2018

As a part of my service, one of our major events that we cover is SAISA. This year, SAISA Girls Volleyball was hosted by OSC. During SAISA we are expected to maintain the livestreams, live scores, photography and videography of the entire 3-day tournament.

GeckoNetwork works alongside the sports department and with the OSC Event Crew, to ensure that all media and technology-related components of SAISA run successfully. Throughout most of SAISA, I worked multiple jobs. I handled livestreams, live scores, was a photographer and handled music during pregame warm ups and breaks in-between games. Additionally, although my focus was on this tournament, I also had the expectations of a DP student to also focus on my IB curriculum and regular schedule. I attended certain classes that I felt obligated to attend, however I kept in mind that the event crew would also need me.

This was something I found very challenging: staying balanced during very busy times. Hence, I decided that this would be my goal and learning outcome for this SAISA: to undertake new challenges and develop new skills. Obviously, this skill and challenge were not exactly “new” to me, but it was something I was definitely going to experience a lot within these next two years and I found it important I developed this skill early on my DP journey.

I was very confident with my jobs during SAISA as I had done them all before in previous SAISAs, besides live scores (which I rarely did during the tournament). Photography is one of my passions, and I developed my skills with it a lot last year. I found volleyball a very easy sport to take photos of, not because it is a slow sport, but because I had to be a photographer for badminton and football last year. Since, badminton is the fastest sport in the world and football took place on the field with uneven lighting, I had become use to take pictures at high shutter speeds and adjusting the ISO instantly, so Volleyball was not quite as difficult.

By the end of the tournament, I felt that I had successfully fulfilled all my jobs and remained balanced with my school work and SAISA. I also earned myself as Sportsmanship-pin from ACS, which I was very proud of. Overall, I had a lot of fun, as always, participating in event crew this SAISA and cannot wait for the next one.
