The initial CAS project had me plan to work with the Bellanwila-Attidiya Sanctuary to help them in their conservation efforts. Regrettably, this project was not able to be carried out and resulted in a change in the project. Recently, Luca and I have been fascinated by the Borneo forests and are distraught at its deforestation. Therefore, we want to notify our community and hopefully convince them to take more action to prevent the usage of palm oil products which, are one of the main causes of the deforestation that occurs in Borneo.
The current plan consists of 2 activities, one includes the hosting of an Instagram profile that posts 3 posts a week and continue this for 2-3 months. Additionally, we plan to also begin a fundraiser such as a bake sale and possibly merchandise to raise funds that could be donated to a reforestation NGO that has not been specified yet.
Social Media account:
This will be primarily posting 3 times a week with a post conveying the beauty of Borneo (convince the audience that the rainforests are worth protecting). The second post would consist of a factual post with statistics on the grave state of the Bornean rainforests. Finally, we would have a post to raise awareness of how to take action to prevent deforestation. Activities such as cutting down the consumption of palm oil products would decrease the need to expand the palm plantations and decrease the exploitation of the land.
Bake Sale:
The second plan is to run a bake sale in which we would raise funds to donate to a Bornean NGO. The bake sale would happen on the 28th of March during the school’s food and fun fair. Luca and I would run a stall in which we sell home-baked products and possibly develop some merchandise for the day. In order to make a significant bake sale earning however, we may need to ask our other peers if they would be willing to make some food which we could sell on the day as well. We can make some T-shirts with some custom art on it and the plan consists of making about 20 of these shirts.
Overall, we will begin by making the posts for the Instagram page, we will then move on to posting on our page for 8 weeks while making some merchandise for our fundraiser event. Finally, we will conduct our fundraiser and maybe even go on to present at an assembly in april.
