Gecko Factor: DP2 group dance

To keep up with the yearly tradition of the DP2s participating in Gecko Factor, our grade had come together to produce a performance that would be reflective of our grade. The first step was to decide on the music choice, this was mainly organized by Rashmi and Disara with some other students of the grade providing some insight into some music choices. The choreography was mainly developed by Rashmi but, as we began to practice and carry out the dance, it became apparent that changes would be a common sight. This led to the synthesis of new movements and overall organizations truly embodying the grade as each student provides their input.

When it came to practicing the dance, it became apparent that it would be difficult to organize all the students and find a viable time to come together that would line up with everyone’s schedules. Over time we would meet in groups to work on each segment in the dance with some moments requiring a heavier use of timing to ensure that the synchronization is on point. This required quite a few practice runs to be made, such that we ensure that each dancer worked on and resolved any of the problematic and weak moments of the dance. On the day of the performance itself, we all got together and ran through the dance multiple times just to enforce our understandings of dance and make sure that it is flawless for when we carry out the final dance.

On the night itself, we all agreed on a dress code to which we wear black pants and a white shirt to establish something that unifies the students as one group. Before the final performance, we still practiced 3-4 times just to know that our dance is in sync and in time with the music. The final performance went well and everyone knew what to do. The most surprising thing to me was how fast it had past and before I knew it the dance had already been done. All the seniors knew what movements to do at what time and our timings were on point with the music and each other.

Even though we didn’t win Gecko Factor which, wasn’t entirely our intention, we created a product which we were all happy with and had a good time while making and practicing the dance. Even though there is some room for improvement overall, I would consider this senior Gecko Factor dance an overall success.
