Helping more around the house, cooking, gardening, and surfing!

The last years have been pretty difficult, we all had a lot of curveballs thrown at us with constant shifts from lockdown to face to face, however, one thing I wasn’t expecting was that I would be moving back to the UK at the end of the year! Since we didn’t have anywhere to stay we’ve been staying at my grandparent’s house for the last couple of weeks from both my dad’s and my mom’s side. To make sure we weren’t too much of a nuisance, I made sure to help around as much as I could, seeing as my grandparents have a large area of land they bought, they always need help with things like

gardening, mowing the lawn, etc,

I’d helped around gardening before at my grandparent’s house but this was much more hands-on work, and I loved it!

There was something rather therapeutic about it that I think was a nice break from working out and other physical activities (even though gardening can be pretty physically draining too!). I also started continuing my cooking routine by helping to cook dinners and also making desserts!

Now that I’m in Cornwall, I’ve also been able to take up some surfing again! Which was a great way to continue some of the skills I learned in Sri Lanka, even though the temperatures are so cold I have to wear a skin-tight wet suit

I found a lot of joy through these seemingly small activities since I finished school very early on in the morning I spent a lot of my days just doing this, whilst also spending more time with my brother since we’ve had to share a room for the last couple weeks, which has been…fun? I also managed to catch up with an old friend from Malaysia in Brighton, it was a nice way to get to know the UK a bit more and also take a break from the stress that school life can bring. But anyway, some of the learning goals that I demonstrated through these activities are:

  • Showing perseverance and commitment: As much as I loved gardening, it was still rather hard some days considering the heat! But to me, that doesn’t distract from the fact that these new skills I learned will be skills I can with me for years to come
  • Working collaboratively with others: Working with my brother and grandparents, just learning new skills about gardening
  • Challenge & skills: Ive done gardening and baking before, but never full cakes and working on full patches of gardens etc, so a lot of this was challenging but I gained a lot of new skills.
