‘nATANDA’ Dance School

During the weekend, I attended an educational yet entertaining performance by the nAtANDA Dance School at their home-turned arts facility. Before the performance, the director/choreographer, Mr. Palihawadana told us about his experience as a Sri Lankan dancer and discussed slavery and the role it plays and has played in society as well as using it as a metaphor for the issues that many people face due to social constructs.  The presentation was  graphic yet necessary in learning about slavery in a historical and contemporary context. The dance performance unpacked these core themes as well.

The dance was very powerful as the group incorporated good use of lights and costumes as well. I was also really impressed by the creativity and progressiveness of the hour long performance by the all Sri Lankan group. I learned a lot about the slave trade and modern slavery as well as how that could be translated and spread awareness through dance. I was glad that I could support the small but incredibly talented group and learn more about Sri Lanka culture, contemporary dance and the pressing topics/issues raised.

The images, taken by me , capture some of my favorite moments of the performance, as well as more information about the company and style of dance.
