Basketball: Game 1

I have been playing basketball ever since I was in fifth grade, it’s a sport that is dear to my heart. Each year I grow a stronger connection to it. Basketball is more than just a game, there is so much more to it like the profound connections and the emotions. This sport has helped shape me to be the person that I am today. It most definitely was not the easiest journey, but it built perseverance and determination within me.

The past month and a half we have been training three times a week. It has been tough but rewarding to notice the change and development. However, about three weeks into the season I tore my ligament and it was one of the hardest things I had to cope with mentally. More than just the pain it was about the practice I missed and the way it affected my skill development. After endless trips to the doctor and the hours spent doing physiotherapy I finally made it back onto the court. The first two practices I had to commence by trusting myself and getting back into the rhythm.

Only three practices in post recovery, we had our first game. Ironically, it was against my old school: The British School in Colombo. It was exhilarating as it was our first time playing a game for this season, with sportswomen outside of school. We interacted with them through the best form of communication, being basketball. Every one of the players obliged to the rules of the game, and played with passion and care. As it is only ethical to follow the rules and play fair. It is our responsibility as a sports team to ensure a well executed friendly match.

I look forward to seeing even more development as the season progresses. My mentality has definitely matured and I feel a lot calmer on court. The anxieties are eradicated once I remind myself of my love for the sport. With every practice and game I will continue to perform nothing but my 110%!
