Gecko Factor 2020

Popping bottles in the ice, sums up how I feel about graduation being right around the corner. Moments like this make me realize how quickly time flies and how close we are to graduating. Gecko factor is an annual talent show hosted by the Student Government association in order to raise funds for  the prom: OSCars. It is a tradition at OSC for the seniors to perform an original dance at gecko factor. To continue and honor this tradition whilst adding another memory to our senior experience, collectively as a grade we decided to participate. Rashmi took the lead to watch videos and choreograph the dance on her own time. She was more excited about creating the sequence than any of us, so we all let her take the wheel for this one. For the most part we were all used to working with each other on dances from our days in PE when we had to create dances for the movement unit.

Although Rashmi was leader for this I was there to help her control the group and add in some ideas. My main job was to brainstorm songs with her and create the sound track. Considering my experience with final cut pro, it only took me 30 minutes to make the final track that we used at the dance itself. The sound track consisted of the following songs: Started from the Bottom (Drake), Like a G6 (Far East Movement), Panda (Designer), Sumihiri pane (Desmond de Silva), Rebola (J Balvin) and Chinese New Year (Sales). After that my main Jobe asides from actually turning up to rehearsals and dancing was complete. I did make an effort to help Rashmi teach people the dance as some people in the grade took a longer period of time to actually learn the moves. For this we focused on those people and helped them learn the moves by breaking them into smaller sections. It was not that complicated teaching the others the dance as Rashmi and Savi had taken time to decide on the moves, entrances, stage placements and transitions. They also did it in a manner that ensured that everyone had a chance to be at the front and to dance with each other. Rashmi should be given credit for dealing with everyone and getting us hyped to dance almost everyday after school.  For the most part we all ended up going with the flow so to speak as many others had suggestions that needed to be considered for the dance. Ultimately, it was a grade dance.

After practicing and practicing for hours on end after school for like two weeks straight we actually had a dance that we were proud of. We were excited to show the school our dance routine as we thought it would get people laughing and most importantly hyped. Getting on that stage in front of everyone in our white tops and back bottoms made us feel cool enough to dance like we owned the stage. All of us were comfortable and seized every moment as we knew it was now or never, there was no other Gecko Factor for us to dance at. The audience’s reaction throughout made the intense and timely sessions after school worth it. Although we did not necessary place top 3, it is safe to say everyone enjoyed themselves and will put this moment in the books.
