Room To Read Second Quarter (First Few Lessons)

We had a lot to work on when we returned to service as the second quarter began. Our primary target is to earn enough money to create a library at the Vidyaloka School, therefore we needed to think of new ways to raise funds. We’ve recently been attending several school events where we put up stands to sell products such as books, but we’ve just expanded into selling snacks outside sporting or theater events. With the screening of the Othello film last night, we were able to offer snacks and drinks such as cookies, popcorn, and drinks provided by our group members to the audience, earning roughly 10,000 LKR. Recently we’ve been searching for sponsorships in order to fund our upcoming Room to Read and OSC joint concert in December. We’ve been creating posters and sending emails to organizations in order to do this.

We have to continually arrange our lessons every Tuesday at lunch break since we teach young students English from Vidyaloka School. We’ve produced slideshows with simple discussion starters as well as important information that young children should know. Our service advisor, Ms Lockwood has found a program with simple questions and worksheets for beginners who are learning English. We print out these worksheets and allow the children do them with pairs, we also provide them books at the the end of the classes for them to further develop their English reading abilities.
