Housing and Habitat – Homerun event

I was really excited for  the homre event as this one of the biggest events held by a service in the school further more i was unfortunatly not able to contribute to the last homerun. the planning  for the homerun event was done well before regarding the Map, The allocation of the water and normal stops along the route. the groups were assigned a session before thee homrun. Some of the changes that we made this year form the prior homeruns was to invite other servies like Room to Read to sell lemonade and ice creams ,Gecko Gear to sell hoodies at the front gate of the school, putting a clock at the front gate so the the runners could track thier time  and finally adding sign in and a sign out sheet for  the participants  where they would have to write thier name contact number so that we could make sure that by the event of the event everyone was back at school. The starting to the event did not go as smooth as we expected as some amny people arrived late leading up to the change of  groups at end moment  nd the drivers of the van were really confused as to where did  they have  to drop us off  due to that for  when we left for  the stops we kept going in the wrong direction for the first 10 min before we realized but after some communication with the eqiupment truck in which jed was seated. we rushed to the stops  becuase at this point we were running late whereas at the school MR .Lebalnc had to hold the crowd for 10-20 min extra. Great work done by our servie leaders Jed and Ansel for solving the issues.  I was placed at the first stop with Malaika and Abeer but soon after we realized that everyone knew where to go and did nto need our help in guiding them so we waited for  all the runners to pass the first stop and then with the permission of Jed, we joined  the Run my while  partners decided to run the whole route i was tired runing form first ot second stop and there i joined Ansel, Jed and Maya in clearing up the stops  as soon as all the runners passed by this included dimantling the table,  picking up the chairs/cups/water dispensors and loading them into a equipment truck while  the student stationed at the stops sat in a van. On the third stop we got the news that one of the  water stops at the end run out of cups so they were reusing the already used cups as soon we heard had Ansel ran to that stop with the cups while we waited  for some runners that were left behind after that we picked up the people at the stops to bring back to school . The stalls of  the other service gorups were  ppretty sucessful especially  the ones selling refreshments. Relfecting back on this i could confidently call this the best homrun conductted so far even though there were some hikcups along the way, the service members contributed a lot towards the event. We made close to 150,000 LKR the highest amount raised in a homerun event to date and more than 90 people attended the event. The money made would go towards making the garden beds. In the session after we spent some time reflecting on the event  came up withe the things mentioned bellow.

  • Communication with drivers – establish plan with Geeth BEFORE departing school
  • Practice the map / route one time BEFORE the event. The person in truck must do a practice run
  • WATER stops – clear instructions for water and cups. Take time to double check
  • Truck / Van needs to leave 40 min before!! Be on time.
  • Maybe wear the same t-shirt ?
  • Be sure people can see the clock when arriving
  • Place a water dispenser at start / finish
  • We need more people to be at the top of the lake
  •  maybe crete a sheet wear pople could write if they would walk or running for easy tracking.

On the other had the list of things that were a sucess were as follows –

  • participant numbers. This year there were over 90 people.
  • Route / Map
  • Sign-in / sign- out sheet – print more
  • Other service with stalls
  • Someone on bike to support
  • Truck / van – drop-off/pick-up
  • Organizing water, cups before
  • Arrival must be 1 hour before
  • 1500 lkr was a good price
