Driving skills in the south of Sri Lanka

Being in the lockdown and not being able to go out was very difficult but as things are coming back to normal now, I finally got a chance to visit the wildlife and explore nature around down south. After being stuck at home for about 5 months, my family and I finally got a chance to go out and to relax in down south (Yala).

On the way, we saw a family of deer, wild boars, peacocks, buffalos and footsteps of elephants but we weren’t able to see any elephants around. The lakes and the roads were almost dried and it seemed that it hadn’t rained there for a long time.

The weather seemed normal but it was very sunny and hot during the day while it was cold at night with the breeze. We also had an opportunity to see many crocodiles lying close to the shore of a mostly dried lake. We stayed about 3 days, enjoying the wildlife and it was very relaxing as both the beach and the jungle were very close to where we stayed. In the morning, we heard the chipping of the birds as we woke up and it was a great experience. I’m really grateful that we were able to go out and relax after being stuck at home for a long time and I’m looking forward to visiting the wildlife as soon as we get an opportunity.

I was able to drive our car where there was no one as a learner because I still hasn’t got a chance to get my driver’s licence. As I was just a leaner, my father was there to guide me through out the journey. I was able to drive for about 10-15 kms and the road was surrounded by trees and bushes and therefore, I had to be careful of the animals crossing the road. I came across learning outcome 2 as I challenged myself to drive in an unusual and unfamiliar surrounding and it gave me the opportunity to learn a new skill. (demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process).

We visited there as a family and it was very fun to enjoy the wildlife as a family and we witnessed a family of dear while I was driving. As we did everything as a family while we were on the trip, I came across CAS learning outcome 5 (demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively). While we were planning the trip I took part of planing the accomodation that we going to stay and because of that I came across learning outcome 3 as I was able to show a responsible attitude by planning the accomodation. (demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience).
