JB Securities internship

This summer, I had the great opportunity to work alongside Vinuda and Akash in an internship at JB Securities. JB Securities is one of the leading stockbrokers in Sri Lanka and is a member of the Colombo Stock Exchange, Sri Lanka. They are currently the dedicated stock brokering arm of the Jafferjee Brothers Group. JB Securities has been involved in stock brokering for over 20 years.

During the internship which spanned for a week, my primary job was to shadow the CEO, Mr. Murtaza. I learned the in-depth process of stock brokering. I was introduced to basic accounting with a compound interest and savings Excel sheet task. Joined grouped market meetings with some of the industry’s largest firms like Lanka IOC. One of the first tasks instructed by my mentor was to listen and be a part of an online market meeting with one of the top local real estate companies in Sri Lanka, Prime Lands. In this first meeting, I deduced what we (JB Securities) were looking for in a real estate company to determine whether it was worth investing in. With a notebook open and a pen in my hand, I wanted to take note and examine the important financial numbers of the company. Moreover, my initial perceptions of stock brokerage firms were clouded by misconceptions that were dispelled during the course of my internship. Preconceived notions led me to believe that a typical stockbroker predominantly engages in the meticulous examination of numerical data within an Excel spreadsheet, culminating in the creation of comprehensive presentations based on their findings. However, on the fifth day of my internship, my perspectives shifted substantially. In order to gain a more comprehensive insight into the targeted company for investment, my mentor orchestrated a site visit, leading us to examine a warehouse spanning 72,000 square meters, commissioned by Access Engineering for Michelin tires.
