In order to come with a series of projects to do with the CAS project we made a list of different things to do for the areas of Creativity, Activity and Service.

Caption goes here

Creativity

  • making a song composed and lyric written from scratch using the Drums
  • building things using Lego or anything for that matter

Activity

  • see how many shots that could be made when playing a rigorous session of Basketball
  • try different serve speeds from a tennis game and calculate the difference found

Creativity

  • hope for kids Christmas Special
  • Beach Clean Up

Eventually I decided it was a good idea to go with Cycling but after selecting we had to come up with some small rules.

  • It has to be between 20 to 25 km to make it smooth and not a tiring ride
  • It has to have a purpose where you are going to cycle and how long its going to take.
  • Where is the place going to be in the City, in the Sub urban areas where the trees are made of rubber
  • It has to be an enjoyable sight when doing such rides of this nature
  • Is it going to be a ride that is meant for scenery or just for a historical purpose

With these rules in place the decision is to take a City ride tour on all of the famous historical places in the map across Colombo ranging from places like Galle face green, Walikada prison and independence square. The purpose of doing this CAS project is to say that even Colombo is a city that looks developed by all of the skyscrapers and big hotel chains. There are some old buildings with a lot of ancient history in all of them and each has a story to tell about how Sri lanka was before famous buildings came in. below is the picture how the route by taking some of the Historical places across Colombo (made on Strava)

From this list I grouped into a colombo 7,2,1,11,13 and 8. In this order I created a cycling route that had a flow. I had to ignore areas that were out of our route. Items marked in red are the places that I will be not visiting as it is too far away. My cycling ride starts in the famous Independence square, the place was built to commemorate the independence of Sri Lanka in 1948.. Then head off to the Colombo national museum, a place where all historical artifacts are displayed including the throne  of the last kandyan king. Then we go towards the Queen Victoria park Currently known as Viharamahadevi park. After that we cycle towards the first hospital ever built in Colombo called the “Eye hospital which today is the General hospital and the oldest hospital in operation as to date. Next we go down Slave Island and pass the Siwasubramania Kovil which is another famous kovil and the oldest of its kind. After that we take a 10 to 15 mintime to get Galle face green which I call the developed side of Sri lanka because of the high chain hotels and scenic views of the beach. We go towards the Dutch hospital where we take a break and cycle through the streets of Pettah. Some say during a certain season thecity of pettah lights up like Times square in New york city, small kade’s in and between the streets cook nice Kottu and provide some of the most delicious food during hours after nine. Then its off to the St Anthony’s church which is in Kochikade, known to be one of the oldest churches to date until refurbished due to the Shocking incident of the Easter bombings in the Easter Morning of 2019. Then once after taking a small break down there we make our final stop at the Welikada prison in Borella (known to be the oldest prison in the world holding people who have committed the worst of crimes mankind has witnessed). Then its a km or two to the beginning of this journey at Independence square completing the round of 25km in the span of 1hrs 3min duration.

The trial run was on 2nd April at around 5.00pm in the evening . Me and my dad set off with our mountain bikes to go. The duration was around 1hrs 23 mins and while the original number of KM we would cover is 25km we were able to cover close to 16.9km to the Curfew being initiated at 6.00pm. Amount distance me and my dad were able to cover started from Baudhalokka Mawatha to finish at pettah and ride back. The only places we had missed when doing the journey is passing kochikade which is St.mary’s church, then going down old manor street and straight through the Welikada street passing the oldest prison constructed since 1841 is on the map below. The total number of calories for the activity was 227 kilo calories by going at an avg. speed 12.2 km/h. One thing I could have done differently is try going at different avg. speeds like 20km that way the whole journey would have been completed but due to curfew and because of the exams slowly approaching it was difficult to get back on tracking my cycling count and trying to get fit.

Learning Outcomes

LO3: As you can see to plan this I took it to account just the way I used to do it for big projects such as the Extended Essay and the Personal Project. I had it by looking at this project in the manner of a Sandwich where there was a brainstorming session as to what would be the ideal CAS project to work with, to coming up with a plan and finally trial running the journey and now it would be open to any cyclist in Sri lanka to do their workouts while gaining a bit of Sri Lankan History on the side.

LO1: This one was just perfecting my skill of being able to Cycle even though I have not been cycling very often during times when I need to work out and try to keep fit, but I have a plan that moment after exams even in Uni I will get back into the cycling setting. One thing I was very proud of myself was though me and my dad had not planned the trial run in advance and on the day when we just decided that “let’s get it over with” I was still able to do the session and not be really tired. This is something I would give Kudos to myself.
