Another Service Change

As I said in my DP 2 goals blog, I changed services from Recycling and Sustainability to Hope for Kids so I can diversify my interests more and that. I had somewhat an idea what to expect from this service since I went to the Hope for Kids cricket match (which sparked my interest) and people in my grade are in as I hear about how the service is going and what is their plan. We had some different types of events going on pretty early to the school year, which is really nice. So, this is an update of what we did in the first term.

(Surprise !!) Books and Cookies

Our earliest highlight at the moment is a surprise Books and Cookies on the 20th September during lunch, in which I presented with Pep, Chirath, and Vansh (collaboration). This was to give the audience (whether they’re in the service, heard of the service, or new to OSC) what Hope for Kids did last year and what we have planned for this year.

Since the presentation started at 12:40, this gave us about 10 minutes to prep and get other people to come and listen to our presentation. Then the presentation began. We talked about who we are, what our mission is, the events we did, and future goals for this year.

This experience was very enlightening for me as even though I’m a new member to Hope for Kids, I still managed to understand what was done as well as what we talked about on Thursdays before and speak about it to other people.

Childhood Cancer Month

Another highlight for me was Childhood Cancer Month, which is represented the whole month, but we picked 27th September as a selected day to have the OSC community to wear yellow as this is the international awareness symbol color.

To help get the others to know about this, we created a poster to post in the Daily Bullinten. To make our poster stand out, we decided to make a slogan that will be used by us in the future, which is “Raising Awareness, One Ribbon at a Time” (made by Anneli and Pep).

This was an overall success for us as people in the OSC community understood our message and wore yellow to show their support. This is really good for us as I can see that our future awareness days going this well too.

Instagram Account

To help spread awareness digitally, we decided to make a Hope for Kids Instagram account, to which I’m in charge of handling the account (when it comes to posting or making account arrangements).

This is still a new thing we made as at the moment, since it’s still in the makings, it has only 1 post (just for meeting the team) and 25 followers as of October 3rd. However,  after some posts, this account can be more successful.

Future Goals

Breast Cancer Month (17th October): Like Childhood Cancer Month, we are going to do the same, but with Breast Cancer awareness, in which we will wear pink and also have a little advisory session with different grades and talk about our service group and raise more awareness. Our goal is to also be successful with our advisory session and do these color wearing days like this once a month to spread awareness.

Photographer + Social Media Director: I have chose to be the photographer and social media director of the group as I feel this will be really easy for me and something I would enjoy doing the most out of the different roles. In terms of my personal goals for this year, my goal for photographer is to take really good photos for the service whether they are for the DPs’ CAS blogs or for the Instagram account. My goal for social media director is to make Instagram posts to spread awareness about different days and to post photos of people supporting our message (eg: wearing a certain color) with infomation about why we decided to do this and our thanks for the people who have done this.
