Rukshi’s CAS Journey

Curfew Log I: Rebuilding my Old LEGO

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic resulted in the closure of schools nationwide and a curfew to be imposed until further notice. Being unable to go outside and engage in my regular activities, I have had to find alternative ways to keep myself busy. At the beginning of curfew, I found myself to be incredibly bored. The amount of Netflix I watched a day increased immensely. In an effort to be more productive, I aimed to do atleast one home workout a day and rebuild my old LEGO as a creative activity.
I began building LEGO when I was 14. The first model I built was the Millenium Falcon from Star Wars. After that, I built a MiniCooper which later fell off a shelf and broke. Hence I decided to rebuild the Mini Cooper. I have always found building LEGO to be very calming and de-stressful. Finding the pieces and putting them together and ultimately creating a beautiful model was one of my favorite hobbies when I was younger.

It was tedious at first because I had to remove all the parts of the car and place them in a pile which made it very difficult to find pieces when I started rebuilding. Moreover, I had lost the instruction manual and had to find the instruction manual online. Since the build was relatively easy, I took only a matter of days to complete the entire model. However, I had to improvise in some places because I have misplaced a few pieces following the fall.

The finished look. I plan to take on a more complex build that would take much longer to complete because it has over 4000 pieces. This took me about 3 months to build but I aim to finish it in a month.

I also took this opportunity to experiment with multiple ways of taking pictures of the same object. Experimenting with different angles and filters allowed me to display the car in many ways.

Experimenting with different styles.

Rebuilding my old LEGO has helped me cope with the overwhelming workload and given me something to do and enjoy during these difficult times.

  • Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Although Lego is fairly simple to make, making these models have helped me improve in my creative ability. Experimenting with my phone camera and taking pictures using different angles have helped me learn and improve in my photography skills which is something I would really like to improve.

  • Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

I took several days to complete this Lego car which I worked on for hours each day in order to complete as soon as possible while also doing it as a stress-reducing and calming activity.
