Rukshi’s CAS Journey

Food Drive and Awareness Campaign

In Hope for Kids this semester, we recently completed a diaper driver where the school community donated diapers for the kids at the Cancer Hospital. We aimed to collect more reusable diapers as they are more environmentally friendly but overall, the drive was a great success! We collected heaps of diapers and Miss. Tanuja (teacher in charge of hope for kids) packed and sent them to the hospital since other members of the group were still learning online at home.

Presently, we are planning our annual food drive where we collect dhal, rice, tea leaves, vegetable oil, and milk powder. Since in person school has finally begun, our service can easily collect food from the school community and deliver it to the hospital. Our service group made posters with information on which items each cohort; primary and secondary should bring. Posters were hung up all over the school as well as on the Instagram account where we post continuous stories and posts on updates about any happenings in our service group. During service sessions on Thursdays, our service divide ourselves into groups to complete the agenda for the session. We generally make  posters for the Instagram account and also the Gecko Newsletter that is sent out to the school at the end of every week.

Story of Awareness Campaign posted on Instagram

As per Hope for Kids’ new approach to service because of the pandemic, we have launched an awareness campaign on our Instagram account where we will aim to educate our fellow OSC community as well as other followers about Child Cancer and its effects. I helped create the first post introducing the campaign. We first posted a series of stories asking general questions about child cancer where we gave four options and to pick the correct answer. We thought it would be a great way to engage viewers and spark their interest in our campaign. Although school has started, our service group is not allowed to visit the Maharagama Children’s Cancer Hospital and it looks like we may not be permitted to go for the rest of the year since COVID-19 is still at large.

I am graduating this year and it brings me great sadness that I may not be able to visit the kids again with my service group as I had hoped, during the lockdown, to play with them and make them smile once more. However, although I will no longer be a part of Hope for Kids in a matter of weeks, visiting the kids at the hospital is not confined to the group and I plan to go see them when we are allowed and perhaps help them in any way in the future.

Learning Outcomes

  • Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Hope for Kids is continuously finding alternate ways to help the kids during these times. Whether it’d be through social media or safely delivering any items they are in need of, we plan to assist them in any way we can.

  • Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The awareness campaign that we recently launched aims to educate people on Child Cancer so that they will be aware of the effects as well as the significance of it in today’s world as more and more children are diagnosed with cancer each year.

  • Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Our group has planned a Food Drive and completed a diaper drive where we were able to safely deliver diapers to the children at the hospital. We carefully planned the drive with covid safety considerations in mind and carried out a successful diaper drive.
