Grilling and Reviewing – CAS Project

Learning Outcome

After some thinking and brainstorming about my previous CAS project idea, an opportunity started knocking at my door, which caused me to change my CAS project in an entirely new direction.

My previous CAS project focused on organizing an underwater and surface beach clean-up, inviting the Sri Lankan community and the OSC community to help save Sri Lankan’s most beautiful aspect; its beaches.

But after talking to one of my friends named Thilan Nanyakara, an editor for a media company e proposed the idea of me joining as a host for a food review segment for a youtube channel. I thought this was a unique CAS project that honed my skill, which is being in front of a camera.

There was a bit of planning that had to be done, so we had to create two goals, our first goal was to create a mini promotional video that introduced me to a host for the food review channel, and our second goal was to film and produce my episode for the Food review channel.

Since my friend was part of a media production company, his role was to film and produce the video since he had the equipment readily available and was skilled. My job for this project was to be a host; therefore, I needed to educate myself on the correct ways of reviewing food and find another suitable host to join me for the show (

Learning Outcome: Initiative and planning)(

Learning Outcome: challenge and skills). Regarding being in contact with the restaurant and organizing the filming date, Thilan and I will be coordinating this together to optimize the date for both our schedules (

Learning Outcome: collaborative skills). Thilan was on the phone numerous times during this process, figuring out all the logistics.

My first step was to find a co-host. After consideration, I settled for one of Thilan’s mutual friends named Sarah and me; she worked with multiple companies before online promotions, so I thought her skill and professionalism would come in very handy for filming.

After finding an additional host, alongside Thilan’s other selected hosts, we all met up and filmed our individual introduction videos.

After a week, Thilan called Sarah and me on a group call and told us the date and the restaurant we would be reviewing. The restaurant that agreed to allow us to was called “The Grill by Doctors Kitchen,” which blended texas barbeque and Asian barbeque.

I had to learn how to describe and critique barbeque to make this review authentic. So to educate me a few days before, I watched many Barbeque review videos. Below are a few links to the videos I studied (Learning Outcome: challenge and skills).

Okay, today was the day… the day of the shoot. I was nervous, but I felt prepared after studying ways of reviewing food. As for usual, my mom drove me to the restaurant. As I looked at the restaurant, I thought it was tiny as there was a small entrance only in the front, but as soon as you walk in the past a small hallway, the building opens up into a decently sizeable restaurant.

I walked around with sam and aided Thilan and his crew with the table set up and the camera set to be more efficient and finish early filming. After setting up the lights, we started filming the video.

When we started filming, I was a bit nervous but having experienced being in front of the camera from modeling made the process easier (

Learning Outcome: Strength and growth). As we completed scenes being in front of the camera and improving became easier and easier.

There were a few ups and downs along the way, like messing up scenes and having to refilm certain sections. But in the end, I enjoyed filming enough it took around 4 hours. I learned a lot from this process; I continued to build upon my social skills and my skill in being in front of the camera and improvising. Additionally, now I can say that I have gained a new skill in critiquing food at a novice level.

After filming, Thilan edited all the clips and made the video. Below I have linked the youtube video
