So for my CAS project, I was thinking of helping the environment. After talking with my modeling agency, I thought it would be a good idea to combine both modeling and environmental activism.
After talking with my agency, I started planning possible cleanup locations and thinking about the logistical components. I needed to think about what date beaches in Sri Lanka needed to be cleaned up, what equipment was needed for the beach cleanup, and where the trash was going to be disposed of.
These are all fundamental questions that I needed to answer before I could even start getting a team together.
Since the beach cleanup is a lot of work, I thought of combining it with an entire organisation, an NGO, called Pearl Protectors. After contacting them, they seemed not to be having an opportunity to do all the beach cleanup anytime soon since they were busy hosting a sponsorship event.
Since I didn’t have a guiding NGO to collaborate with in this journey, I had to reevaluate the entire project.
Since I’m only one person with little to no experience in cleaning, I didn’t want to overwhelm myself. So I concluded that I would be organising a beach cleanup with OSC members that I know, and who I am close to, as that will make it a lot easier to manage and plan. Since I already thought of cleaning Mount Lavinia beach because it recently has all the restaurants open that seems to be a lot of trash around the area, I thought maybe if I could bring a group of people, it would be helpful to make the place nice again.
So from now on, I need to start looking for places where trash can be disposed of. And with the help of Chloe, a classmate of mine who knows the beach cleanup, she’s going to help me organise the equipment list that I need to buy for the team that I will be putting together very soon.
During school, I spoke to 2 of my peers, Johail and Devanga, and we thought it would be beneficial for all of us if we put out minds together. The current plan is to combine both an underwater ocean clean up with my beach clean up and digitally capture the process and post it on social media
I’m hoping that we will do a successful beach cleanup during the December break. If not, we’ll have to be planning it for next year.
