UN Day Performance: Chaka – Affan

Where words fail, music speaks.” –

Hans Anderson

In addition to leading the class presentations, I also performed a Maldivian piece by Affan, named Chaka, for the final assembly where the head of school, the board of directors as well as the chief guest were present. Stage fright left me a while back considering how often I am put on stage, most of the time on short notice, but I was quite underprepared for the performance, so I was shivering slightly before the performance.

Or maybe that’s just because the auditorium was unusually freezing that day.

I played my acoustic guitar alongside Aisha who sang in Dhivehi, the Maldivian dialect, and the lyrics talk about today’s generation and the problems with it. We only practiced about four times together before the performance as we were informed quite late and had to rush. However, to both mine and Aisha’s surprise, the performance went great!

People were clapping along, despite being way off-beat, and some students even turned on the flashlights in their phones to wave at us. I was a bit disappointed later at home, however, as I watched a recording of the performance on my mother’s phone and realized that the sound quality was not great during the performance. The mic did not capture every chord and the volume was much softer than the clapping, diminishing most of the sound from my guitar.

My face when the audience started clapping off-beat

Nobody complained about it though, and everyone seemed to have enjoyed it which was lovely to hear.

Next time, I would have to do a proper sound check before the performance to make sure the volume and all chords are being captured correctly.
