Animal Welfare

When I studied in the American International School of Dhaka there was a requirement for all high school students to be a part of a service learning group. These groups varied from working with children to helping the paralysed, working with acid attack survivors and there was even a group whose sole purpose was to help AISD become more green. However out of all the groups there, The Animal Welfare service group caught my eye. Their main goal was to help spay and nature the dog in Baridhara and eventually find them a forever home. That was I group that I ultimately chose to be in.

I’ve been a part of the Animal Welfare group since I was a freshmen however it was only during the beginning of junior year where I decided to take a leadership role within the group. I ran Vice president and secretary and I got the position. At first this seemed like a small task, but I soon realised the weight of the position. There were many meetings to attend to, plans that were made and had to be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances. However I managed to pull through. I made sure that our group was organized and was working efficiently to reach our goal. Something that I really wanted our group to practice this year was team work. In previous years, all of the work would be completed by the leaders and the other group members wouldn’t have a clue as to how the group was coming along. This year I wanted that to change. I wanted to make sure that everyone is in the loop about what was going on, and the the work was spread evenly amongst the group.

We planned and hosted many stalls to earn money to help our cause. Our best stall being the face painting booth at the annual halloween carnival at our school. Where we earned $500 which was much more than what we had expected. This was able to project our future plans to even greater extents than what we originally planned.

Overall in my time as Vice president/ secretary the animal welfare group we were able to accomplish a lot not for just ourselves but for the street dogs of Dhaka city.
