Reading Buddies Session 1

My group introducing the book to the kids (by: Ms.Paarame)

Led by Mr.Polous, we are conducting a series of collaborations with Primary. Since September, I have participated in the 4th grader’s Reading Buddies project with my group (Chathil, Thevuni, Sasindu, and Filip). We were all very excited upon hearing about this activity, and tried our best to make it enjoyable.

During our planning stage, we first sort out several potential dates and blocks for us to do the activity, then managed to make a final decision with Ms.Stella, the 4th-grade teacher. We then got permission from our teachers of the block, Mr.Lockwood and Mr.Russo. At last, we confirmed where and how our first meeting will be carried out – It will be a 30-45 minute session in the primary library, and our book options were Tintin and Greek Mythology (LO3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience). We had also expected ourselves to be flexible and improvise solutions during the actual activity.

Before the session began (By: Thevuni)

During the session, we split the whole Grade 4 class into 2 groups. Chathil, Filip, and I read Greek Mythology on Persephone. We each took turns reading one page and explaining some of the ideas in the book. Since the kids were also learning about Greek Mythology in class, they were very engaged and interactive. After finishing the book, we had some fun conversations about our lives and personalities. I felt that I haven’t made many interpersonal connections with the kid, for I was a bit intimidated by the idea of kids at first. However, the kids were very interactive, which was completely different from what I have expected. While the children learned about a new Greek goddess, we also learned how to convey our knowledge to younger audiences (LO2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process). All of us were able to take away something from this session, and we were all looking forward to the next sessions.
