Curation of My Visual Art Exhibition

To prepare for the final IB VA exhibition, 5 of us Visual Art students worked extra hard in planning, curating, and constructing a presentation of our works. With the help of Ms.Eagle and the maintenance stuff, we put on our show on March 23rd.

The theme of my artworks is largely influenced by my experiences. I want to demonstrate “self-consciousness” from living in 4 different cultures. The keyword “self-consciousness” can be understood as my exploration of identity as an overseas Chinese, and the appreciation of surrounding cultural elements that contributed to my perspectives. I sought to present to viewers my awareness of interactions within distinct cultural contexts through the 10 artworks. 

In my exhibition, I choose to curate my artwork in a separately-constructed space using white background boards. As audiences enter, they are presented with an imaginary gallery of the concocted cultural environment to which I am exposed. And they can piece

out my life journey by seeing the artwork representing my perspectives of cultures. As they finish navigating the exhibition, they will end up at an angle where they see my artworks all at once.

All the exhibited artworks reflect on a piece of my awareness and acknowledgment of my cultural roots and social surroundings, and I intend for the viewers to obtain a holistic view of my cultural journey through a coherent navigation of my exhibition. I was surprised to receive several orders and even commissions, and I was happy to see my art style is appreciated.
