Eleez’s Transcription

Instruments and music have always been an area of interest for me. I’ve played the piano since I was 5, but due to restrictions for the past year or so, I have been unable to formally attend my class, where I do both practical and theory. Thus, I took it upon myself to continue studying music, but instead of simply practising my playing, I decided to do something slightly different to improve my aural performance. I chose to listen to a piece of music that I liked and then transcribe it. I found this quite challenging, my listening hasn’t always been good, and my pitch isn’t the best. Notation can sometimes be very complex when including things like ties, progressions, rests, etc. The song I am transcribing is in 6/8 time, a time signature I haven’t worked a lot with; this made the transcribing process even more interesting as I would learn a lot along the way. So far, I have transcribed 13 bars; I want to transcribe till the end of the first chorus.  Ideally, after that, I can attempt playing the entire piece to determine its success in relation to the original track.

Learning Outcomes:

  • LO1: Demonstrate they have undertaken challenges, developing new skills in the process
  • LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in their CAS experience
