My Role in OSCars

OSCars is OSC’s version of prom, the only difference being the play on words. This is a highlight for high school as it is a night filled with a night away at a fancy hotels event room, with a buffet full of delicacies, a DJ hyping everyone up on the dance floor, awards, and everyone’s favourite: the photo booth. It’s always a hassle to organise these things as hotel bookings fill up fast for weddings later on in the year so we had to be on track since the very first SGA meeting. Apart from taking part in discussions behind venue, decorations, ticket pricing and more, I took upon myself the task to design a poster and the tickets.

The theme was masquerade ball, but I wasn’t finding any designs that met the brief of creating a mysterious and lavish tone to the evening. Going through Canva templates, many designs were too photo-realistic or too cartooney to the point where it felt like the event wasn’t serious. So I decided to combine some elements I liked for each. I stuck to a gold, black, red colour scheme to give a sophisticated look to the designs. In the end I came up with these designs:

I’m really proud of how they turned out! I’ve tried doing digital designs in the past but have not always been successful. What this process taught me is that it’s easier to start out with elements and place them into groups, so that when you move them they move cohesively allowing for a symmetrical and balanced look. I learned some colour theory too; which shades look best with each other, which background makes the text pop etc. For the poster Mrs Echols ended up creating a photo-realistic one that didn’t cover the information and with the help of our Head of Events (Olau) we placed them around the school for high school students to see. I received many compliments on the tickets and I am ecstatic about that because I did pour my heart into this little project; making time during my studies to put it together for everyone.

The event itself was a lot of fun, filled with laughter and slightly off key singing from the dance floor. Since we had a list of people who purchased tickets or reserve them, those who forgot the physical ticket at home were still able to come in and enjoy themselves with their friends.
