Primary Workshop 4

This session was oriented more towards providing the children with a visual of what they have been working towards understanding. Before, my sessions commenced I saw the children playing with clay using reusable materials. They showed me the different methods in which they make attempts to recycle in their classroom. It was truly a rewarding feeling to see them practicing the things that I discuss with them during these sessions.

They used old bottle caps to mold their play dough during play time

I took the kids during lunch to see the biogas plant and they were overjoyed to see it and ran eagerly to show me where it is at School. I was overjoyed to see the children demonstrate such high levels of passion and concern towards a project that means a lot to me. It is amazing how knowledge can be shared and how these large ideas can be placed within these children, as they continue to prove their understanding for the content.

The kids exploring the bio gas plant

Once they were be forth the bio gas plant, they were eager to tell me all about everything we had discussed in the classroom. As there were several videos shown, posters made and large discussions to help them grasp this complex idea. Many of them accurately shared their understanding with everyone, leaving me impressed with how much they have picked up on over the couple of sessions. A few even took note of the prominent smell that was emitted from the bio gas plant, whilst proceeding to explain the reasons for it. I was trying to get them to understand how all the food that they throw into the green bins gets put into bio gas plant and then converted into gas. It took quite a lot of patience and breaking down of the concept from my end to make it fully understandable for them.

The kids asking questions about the bi products produced

Ms. Chee Wan, their classroom teacher had collected some banana peels and apple cores from which the children had eaten. This was to provide them with an opportunity to responsibly recycle with the bio gas plant. All of them eagerly pleaded for me to raise them so that they could feed the plant with the organic waste and peek a look inside. Their curious minds wandered as they continuously posed questions at me, it was a lot harder for me to answer these technical questions without thinking about what I could say. Since they wouldn’t comprehend if I were to use the heavy vocabulary that is frequently involved with such scientific matters. However, over the course of the past few sessions I have learned to master the basic language that needs to be used when speaking with them. In which these large ideas simply need to be broken down into sections so that they could understand each section separately.
