Lights, Camera and Action! This years’ senior production was a recreation of Shakespeare’s famous: a midsummer night’s dream. Victory only comes through wear and tear. This pretty much sums up, the journey for senior production 2018. After three months of dedicated hard work, everything came to together. It was a wonderful experience and it was my first ever high school production. The experience of being a part of the cast was a life long ambition, with very little room for comfort. But with only a year and a half left until my high school journey is over, it became one of my top priorities. After endless rehearsals three to four times a week, the lead up to curtain call was only a dream.

I learned skills ranging from: time management, acting, punctuality and collaboration. Which are all applicable in variety of aspects beyond the stage. Production was a great way for me to expand my creativity and test the untouched waters. Although it was my first time, it most definitely won’t be my last. I grew a connection to the adrenaline and chaos from the beautiful art of acting.

I still remember the rush backstage to get the pillows across, without making a single noise. It was a lot of team work and a whole load of stress. The rush to get everything in order and help each other out, will be dearly missed. Although I was merely a fairy (the chorus), there were so many technical aspects to this production in which we were involved with. The timing had to be exact, in order for us to match the actions on stage. Through which my appreciation for the little details in theatre grew. It took a lot of experience and knowledge to finally comprehend the purpose behind every directorial choice made.

I also learned so many important skills and gained a lot of knowledge in regards to live theatre, that could help me immensely for IB DP theatre HL.  It made a lot of things I had previously learned in class a reality and my understanding for various theatrical components grew a lot more. The most important being the famous words of Tray (director) “what is your purpose?”.  Which is one of the most vital questions that can lead to a successful performance. As an actor there is so much more to the action than simply just the direction, in theatre we call them performance elements. These aid to make the piece as rich and meaningful as it is.

On the two final performance nights we have a full houses. The initial nerves were a killer, but were instantly calmed by the reassurance of the more experienced performers. It was amazing to see the reaction on our friends faces as they intensely engaged by the production. Everything we had worked for was being appreciated in those exact moments, the bursts of laughter overfilled our hearts. The feeling was truly indescribable. It was rewarding to finally see the piece at its peak, with nothing by dedication and passion from everyone who participated. The friendships built and the moments created will remain with us throughout, reminding us of a time of perseverance and joy.
