Pre Season Prep – Basketball

“It’s what you do in the dark, that puts you in the light” – Micheal Phelps

Since the start of the first quarter, I have been focused on not only my academics but also basketball. As the second season approaches, I feel even more prepared then I last did. I have taken initiative to improve my mental and physical strength, by integrating extra practices into my busy schedule. It is a great time for me to focus on my weaknesses within the sport and to get active! I signed up for fun basketball to have a weekly game of scrimmage, where I can improve my shooting under pressured situations. I also started Saturday morning practices, where I practice shooting/dribbling drills and fitness. Madeleine and I, started this weekly plan to make us stronger players for the upcoming season. It is also a lot more fun and helpful having another player practice with me.

Basketball is one of my favourite sports, I have played it for six years now and see no sign of stopping. I have come a long way as a player and only through hard work and dedication. These practices are a lot more focused, as I can improve on my personal flaws. These include: shooting under pressure and faking. It has now been 3 weeks, since I have started this routinely practice and I can already see a difference in my play. I feel a lot more confident with myself and I avoid pondering upon my mistakes, as it tends to bring me down mentally.

An example of an 8 am, Saturday practice would be:

  • 5 minute run while dribbling the ball
  • 5 suicides while dribbling the ball
  • 15 minute core and arm strength training
  • 15 minutes of lay up with defence shooting
  • 10 minutes jump shots
  • 50 rebound shots drill
  • 15 minutes of free throws

These drills are catered towards shooting and muscle endurance, as these were my main weaknesses last basketball season. I want to improve and feel prepared going into the season. With Madeleine around during the practices, it has helped me better my mentality and change my outlook on any mistakes made. Since I was fortunate enough to be selected co captain last basketball season, I need to become stronger (mentally) so that the girls have an example to look up to. Mind over matter!
