Overall the ISTA trip was profound, engaging and deeply collaborative event that highlighted new approaches to theatre, particularly physical theatre. As the event was in Thailand, most of it was entrenched in Thai culture, the workshops drawing references to a traditional theatre form known as Kohn and the performances watched relating back to Thai history.
It was a 4 day event featuring 5 different workshops:
- Collaboratively creating original theatre
- Staging Play Texts
- Kohn
- IB Perspectives
- Performing theatre theory
We also watched two performances: River story (interactive), Dara-ang (informative) as well as a dinner that a dance and musical troupe enriched.
On the last day we were lucky enough to hear a former flight attendant’s journey with theatre and how that transferred in other aspects of her life.
This was a large learning opportunity that opened by eyes to new ways of creating theatre and challenged me to think more creatively and critically about this process.
Just as much was learned from the workshop leaders as my peers. Particularly engaging was the opportunity to see how other DP Theatre students approached the curriculum and we were even lucky enough to see someone’s CTP (collaborative theatre project) performed live, followed by a Q&A session.
It was interesting to see, as well, the growth between middle-school ISTA festivals and high school ones.
