Azan's CAS Journey

Snapshots from my learning in the IB Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS) program.

CAS – Gecko Net Service

CAS – Gecko Net Service

Service has been an area of CAS which has not been consistent on my end to say the least. Beginning the year I was ready to start my role as a service leader on the CheckMates service group. Unfortunately we were forced to cancel the service group and instead join existing service groups. Despite my attempts to revamp the group we were unable to bring it back. However I did embrace my new service and have completed multiple tasks for Gecko Net. Our big project last semester was the end of year video. For this we had to compile videos and interviews from our 2020 to recap the year. We were assigned different roles in order to get as many clips as possible. This is another activity which was affected heavily by the ongoing virus. Last year this service had been able to gather recordings from school life daily just by going to different classes or extracurricular activities while they were active. Obviously this is no longer an option for us and we either have to create the clips ourselves or gather it from around our school body which is harder said than done. We decided it was best to have a good variety of clips to ensure uniqueness and diversity within the video. Therefore people within the service group would either gather interviews or activity clips from students and teachers ranging from MYP 1 to DP 2.

We began planning for this adaptation during the time we were in DLP so we took the necessary steps to fulfill this. Our service leaders gave us all different grades and types of clips to collect. I was asked to get DLP activity clips from MYP 10. When I refer to activity clips it’s basically videos of a person doing anything engaging at home. This helps show an aspect of the DLP lifestyle while having interesting and unique clips for the final video. At first the people I had emailed were reluctant to send clips of themselves understandably. It is hard to just record yourself for the whole school to see. However after some time and effort I managed to get a couple clips from some students I knew in MYP 10. It goes to show that there is a lot of perseverance and hard work to create these final end of year videos for assemblies. I think it also taught me that in real life we are forced to face adversity and work around it no matter what. This video was a group project however my individual effort was required to gather all the necessary clips required so it was vital that I did this properly. At the beginning of the year I had underestimated the workload of Gecko Net but after this I am more prepared to face the challenges which I will endure as the year goes on.
