I am currently in the process of making a documentary for my service group, Gecko Net. This documentary will focus on ‘Life in DLP, as evident in the title of the documentary, but from the student’s perspective. As a service group, we plan on making a documentary each quarter or semester depending on how demanding it may be to acquire footage and edit the video. As of now, we have brainstormed a couple more ideas for future documentaries/short videos and are working on finishing this documentary as soon as possible.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I identified my own strengths and also developed my weaknesses in numerous ways. First of all, the footage was entirely filmed and edited by me. This is one of my strengths as I enjoy editing videos, but, this is also the first time I’ve ever recorded footage. I feel as though I really developed this area of videography as I put a lot of effort into planning the video clips I’d get. Additionally, I have never filmed and edited a ‘day in the life’ type of video so this type of video editing was completely foreign to me. On the contrary, I am very good at editing sports videos as I have been practicing that aspect of videography since the 7th grade. This shows that I am able to incorporate my strengths as well as work on my weaknesses whilst creating this documentary.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
There were numerous challenges that had to be undertaken which allowed for me to develop new skill sin the process. For example, this entire documentary making process was coordinated online. This made is much harder to ensure that everybody involved in the production of the documentary met the deadlines that were set. Additionally, it made it much harder to collaborate as we would usually utilize the equipment from school to create high quality and diverse videos, but due to us being online, I had to make do with my GoPro. This clearly wasn’t ideal as GoPros are not meant to create cinematic videos, instead, they are meant for action and adventure videos. Fortunately, I did learn more about how to manipulate the settings of the GoPro to better fit the type of video I wanted to create.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Lastly, I showed the ability to demonstrate my skills and also recognize the benefits of working collaboratively. This is evident as all of the interviews from the documentary were obtained by other members. Ms. Jackson made sure to delegate different roles for each of us (Thisath, Max, Andrew, Azan, Olly & I) so that we all had a job to do. In order to better organize ourselves, we made a shared google drive folder where we stored all of the interviews as well as the plan for the documentary.
