It’s been a little over a month since the start of the new school year, and my service group has been developing in the right direction ever since. As a service leader, my peers and I meet with our advisor (Ms. Lockwood) every Tuesday at lunch to discuss and plan out how our service would operate on the days that we have it. These sessions enable us to assign tasks to each member of the group as well as arrange fundraisers and events. We’ve spent the last several sessions at our service supporting young children at the Vidyaloka School to acquire fundamental conversational skills and English. In the last school year, we used an online program in order to teach English although recently we’ve moved on to more physical ways of learning such as flashcards, slideshows, and worksheets. Our service group set up a stall at the back-to-school picnic around two weeks ago to sell donated books. We earned around 38,000 rupees, and all the funds raised were donated to the Vidyaloka School for the construction of a two-story library. Our service has been constantly hosting fundraisers in order to construct this library, the next event we have been planning for is the Room to Read joint concert where students of the Vidyaloka School will perform songs and dances alongside other students in OSC.
