Volleyball tournament

There is no doubt that today was one of the best days of our volleyball season. As the anticipated volleyball tournament slowly approached, the day had finally arrived. Every single one of the girls was pumped to get together as a team and work together in order to secure our victory. I say this with an emphasis on the girls that have been here since last season. Last year, in this very same tournament, we came last place. It was a humbling feeling but this only pushed us to put our mistakes behind us and focus on growing as a player and a teammate. We were in the first game of the day, and the team we were playing was definitely the easiest. The nerves built up as the whole gym watched us. With the boys team watching on the balcony it was quite nerve-racking knowing that last year’s champions were now watching us play since I look up to quite a few of them. As we dominated the first set, towards the end of it I scored almost 10 aces. I was more than proud of myself. As we went on to win this game, we decided to watch the boys and get ready for our next match. One of my close friends who doesn’t live in Colombo came to watch as well as my dad. The adrenaline was kicking in as we got ready for our next game with a slightly harder team. One of my teammates moms brought liquid IV which is an electrolyte powder you can put into your water, it was so good and kept me really hydrated. We won the second match and soon came the third game. This game had my anxiety and heart racing because not only was this the hardest team but if we beat these guys then we win the whole tournament. During the first set at the start, the other team was in the lead. Eventually, with some killer serves and determination, we were able to catch up and surpass them in points as we went on to win the first set. The second set approached and we were doing well towards the start. Then, they started to catch up and they took over our points. At this point, they were around 5 points ahead of us but we didn’t let our guard down and we pulled ourselves together and persevered. As the last whistle blew announcing that we had won, the feeling was amazing. I had felt as if all the hard work and effort I had put in as well as my team had put in was finally paying off and we were able to see a clear difference. This experience made us all closer as a team for sure and it is definitely something that I’ll remember for a long time. Go Geckos!!!
