Primary School Track and Field Meet

For our primary school sports program, OSC has taken the initiative to host an annual track and field meet with other schools in Colombo. Some of my teammates and I were asked to help out as officials for the event after our practice on Saturday morning.

Set up of the meet at our school

We first started out by helping Coach Mac time and record the 50-meter sprints. We each had different roles, I used the iPad app called Coaches Eye to time the athletes, Andrew used the stopwatches to double-check the times, and Alex had to remember the order of the athletes when they crossed the finish line.

Then we helped out with the field events, I was assigned to help the long jump. After organising the athletes, my role was to measure the jumps, while Alex recorded and Chloe raked the sand. At first we recorded the jumps of the younger girls age group, then the older.

At the end of the day we timed the 4x50m and 4x100m relays. The roles that we had at the beginning of the day we kept so I continued to use the iPad to time the kids.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • We learnt collaboration through helping one another in order to successfully record accurate data to help the primary students
  • Additionally, I learnt about management skills through organising the kids to their designated spots.
