Service goals for the final quarter of DP1
As the new (and final!) quarter of the academic year starts, ASA’s and service groups resume their work. The service group that I participate in, Room To Read, is immensely active even before service had officially commenced.
As the upcoming service leaders, Eleez and I had a meeting with Ms. Lockwood a few days before our first service session of the quarter – and we discussed a variety of topics in relation to our service.

The main content was about the opening of the Secondhand Bookstore that RTR is planning, now that we have confirmed the location for it, all that is left is starting up the actual store. There are many different tasks that we have to complete, ranging from the opening to shelving the books. Yet, I believe that Eleez and I, with the help of Ms. Lockwood, were able to successfully organize and allocate the tasks.
Afterward, we went over future Books n’ Cookies speakers and the topics of interest that they will talk about. Which was followed by planning for a future literary afternoon – a fundraiser in order to raise awareness and accumulate funds to start up the building of Bapajaya Vidyaloka Maha Vidyalaya School’s library.
Eleez and I have some tasks which have to be completed in time for certain events that we have to complete, and I think that the establishment of deadlines will help us in order to complete these productively.
We have several new students in the service group, and I believe that commencing these tasks with them would be a great way to get to know them and work together in achieving the service goal!

Learning outcomes:
- LO3 – Initiative and planning
- As a new service leader for Room To Read, I will be uptaking a prominent role in planning and leading the service activities that we conduct.
- At the time of writing, Eleez and I have already had session of planning with Ms. Lockwood in which we went over a lot of content over what to do in upcoming service sessions and tentative events (fundraisers, Books n’ Cookies, etc.)
- I am quite excited to be able to hone my leadership skills and put my organization skills into practise during this quarter.
- LO4 – Working collaboratively with others
- Working collaboratively is a large part of service, particularly in Room To Read, as all of the activities that we plan have to be carried out with the collaboration of the entire service group.
- I think that considering my experience with this service, I am quite confident with my skills in this learning outcome – and cannot wait to work together more with my service group.
- LO6 – Global engagement
- Engaging with a global issue is the impetus of service, and Room To Read addresses the issue of the lack in resources and literature that many students face (primarily in developing countries).
- With the upcoming events and fundraisers that my service group are planning, I can affirm that we are back and better than ever this quarter!
