Initial ideas
Since it’s towards the end of the year, this time period is very important especially for seniors. In terms of CAS, there is a major project called the ‘CAS project’ where with the help of others, students work together to accomplish a stated goal in one or more of the three categories – Creativity, Activity, and Service.
Some ideas that I came up with during my brainstorm session is:
- (C, S) A kindness wall (in the entrance maybe): Encourage kids to write positive comments targeted to someone or just a nice comment in general. For example: “You’re strong and beautiful. You will get through this.”
- (C, S) Free period/menstrual products in the bathroom or counselors office: Although the nurse’s office does have pads and tampons, students might sometimes feel uncomfortable getting them and also the nurse’s office is a long way from the bathrooms. Having it in the bathrooms might make it easier for them to access. I could create a decorative box where these items can be stored in the bathroom.
- (S) Weekly food donation to homeless people – One thing I noticed that has been constant is the homeless people in front of temples. To help them, I sometimes go with my mom to give them free food and sometimes money, too. This is to help them in any little way that I can and I think cooking the rice with my mom is a great bonding experience, too.
- (C,S) Create a self-care Instagram for OSC – this account would consist of different posts about randomized info about mental health such as motivational messages, affirmations, how-to (calm down nerves, be happy, etc), self-care ideas, and many more. This could help people in learning how to manage anxiety and other illnesses. I think this would be a great idea as I am very interested in mental health and helping people who struggle with such issues.
- (C,S) Creating a recipe book for vegetarians. As I am a vegetarian and I’ll be going to college next year, I need to start cooking independently. In addition, since we are in the middle of a pandemic, this might be helpful for many people around the world.
Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Demonstrate and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Reflection
To finalize my decision of which CAS project I would like to do, I will be asking the doctor and Ms Fleming about the availability of sanitary pads and tampons in the bathroom. Regarding the rest of my ideas, I will still need to think about each carefully before I decide what I would like to do.
