COMUN and the EXCO interviews

EXCO Interviews:

This Halloween, from 10 am to 7:30 pm I interviewed about 35 people to be a part of The Exco this year. It was a really interesting process especially because it was on zoom. I learned to be patient, innovative, and most importantly, I learned a skill that I will use in the future which is to interview people. It was exhausting as well because being in the same place for so many hours can be exhausting. I was on zoom the whole day and it took a lot of patience to give every interviewee a fair chance even if the position was already taken. I learned how to ask the right question and how to engage with an interviewee ethically and professionally. I was more than happy to help them at points they were nervous and that helped me develop leadership skills as well as be a good sport in times where people needed my guidance. These interviews also reminded me of last year where I was in their position. This made me realize how I needed to handle these applicants and how the way I act and present myself really has an impact on my representation of not only OSC but the MUN community of Sri Lanka. As you can see with the picture on the left, during our breaks, we did have fun and enjoyed the time as well. I learned a lot from the applicants themselves, about their leadership experiences and how they can be better and that helped me understand where they were coming from and what I as a leader can improve on. This process is truly informing and it helps us build our personalities and better our current selves. I believe we were really dealing with LO4 and LO7 this time and even LO2.
I am now more confident in leading interviews and have definitely improved my listening skills. An Advice that Dr. Lundin gave me was that “Be more neutral and don’t put all your cards on the table” and I applied that to all of my interviews and it did work because by being neutral you are not giving or taking away hope from an applicant. I am really happy with this experience in general and to be able to have such an amazing opportunity to learn, experience, give, and grow.
