Making A New Friend in Art

For the past few weeks, art has become a very important part of my routine. Since activities have been canceled and it looks like we are jumping into the second wave of the pandemic here in Sri Lanka, I find comfort in knowing art will always be here when I need an escape from the crazy world. She allows me to be myself, and she never judges when I convey my thoughts and feelings. Sometimes I do not know what I am telling her but she can take all my focus away for a moment in time and that is quite a difficult task these days.

I am also able to introduce her to my friends and family as she offers a means of communication that could never really be translated into words. She loves color, reads all of the tones in a systematic way but she also enjoys darkness because she isn’t afraid of it.

She teaches me precision and she teaches me patience, something that sounds like it takes a lot of thinking, but it doesn’t take anything at all, sometimes you don’t even know that you are doing it. The point is, in such a chaotic world, things we take for granted like a simple notebook and pencil can become the solace you need, the alternate universe where you thoughts can lie.

Learning outcomes:

Through this situation, I have been able to strengthen my thinking skills through art especially because I try to bring meaning to each of the artworks I create. I am growing through this process as well in terms of my perspective of the world, it began with feelings of nervousness but now I feel far more confident and motivated to be as resilient as I can! Through the activity, I have practice strength and growth by becoming more reflective and exercising skills such as patience through art. I have also approached art by looking to the outcome of commitment and perseverance as I needed to continue doing it even when I thought it was difficult or when I could not find the time. I also looked through the outcome of challenge and skill to improve my abilities in an area that was very unfamiliar but I enjoyed.

Art that I created.
