What is Duke of Edinburgh?

Duke of Edinburgh (or DOE) is an extra curricular activity in which we do multiple activities. We complete logs like CAS, for Skills, Physical Recreation and Service. We also have an Orienteering Session in which we learn and practice orienteering skills and then 2 adventurous journeys, where we go out and practice the skills we learned. There are 3 awards to earn in DOE; Bronze, Silver and Gold. I completed the Bronze award last year and am currently in progress of doing the Silver award.

The Orienteering Session

During the orienteering session for me it was revision from last year, as I did it for the Bronze award last year. However, it was nice to jog my memory from it. We learned how to interpret maps, such as knowing what different symbols mean and what different colors on the map mean. We also learnt how to measure distances from the map, and how to write them with a compass bearing. One more thing we learnt about was pace keeping while walking, and how to make route cards of our journey and how to document our journeys.

Learning Outcomes

CAS relates to multiple learning outcomes. One of them is learning many new skills, like what we learnt in the orienteering session with the maps and compasses. We also are undertaking new challenges, which is documenting our hikes in an effective manner, and also using our newfound skills properly.

Overall, I am very excited for this year of DOE, and I do hope it is as fun as it was last year.
