In DP Music, we’ve embraced the main idea of exploring new facets of our talents and delving into unfamiliar activities to foster experimentation. Applying this mindset to my passion for singing, I embarked on the journey of teaching my friends how to sing. This initiative aimed to provide them with the opportunity to explore a skill they’ve long desired to acquire, within a safe and trusting environment, which allowed for better collaboration.
Despite my lack of prior teaching experience, I undertook this project to gain new insight into the boundaries of my abilities. Initially, I started with just two friends, allowing me to hone my teaching abilities while focusing primarily on their vocal development. To ensure structured progress, I structured a plan for each lesson. I first planned when I could do these activities:
Date | Time |
May 12th – Friday | 3rd block = 11:50 – 1:20 |
May 19th – Friday | 4th block = 2:00 – 3:30 |
May 23 rd (Tuesday) or may 26th (Friday) | 4th block = 2:00 – 3:30 OR 8:25 – 9:55 |
May 31st -Wednesday | 4th block = 1:45 – 2:30 |
June 8th -Thursday | 1st block = 8:25 – 9:55 |
After the initial session with Shinara, my first participant, I gained valuable insights into the dynamics of a lesson and discovered my strengths as a teacher, particularly in explaining vocal techniques—a skill I hadn’t ever explored. However, I encountered challenges in catering to Shinara’s specific vocal style, as my vocal capacity is mostly rooted in blues, jazz, and R&B. My aim for our next class is to gain familiarity with her vocal style, to effectively teach her.
