Stepping out of my Comfort Zone : Library Performance

On the 14th of September, our DP music class had a performance in the library. I sang ‘Love on the Brain’ by Rhinanna, in the genre of Pop, which I’m not usually accustomed to. The purpose of doing this is to test out in front of a live audience, some of the songs we are all thinking about performing in our ‘Performing Music’ portfolio. In addition to that, we have three more portfolios to complete in the DP course. However, this one in particular is a challenge because it takes me out of my comfort zone. For signing, I mostly stick to the genre I most comfortable singing and enjoy, which is R&B and Blues. Nonetheless, the whole point of this task is to pick and perform four songs that share different AOI’s: music for political expression, music for listening and performance, music for dramatic impact, and finally music technology in the electronic, digital age. Therefore, through each AOI the song should differ in stylistic elements, to teach the student how to adapt to new styles. Hence, to remain singing just the genres I like and am used to, is not an option for this task. However, through performances like this, I can identify other genres that interest me and expand my voice to adapt to them. I think through this experience I have been able to grow vocally, by taking more risks and facing uncomfortable situations, in terms of singing a genre I am not accustomed to, in situations like this.
