Jaya's CAS Journey

Snapshots from my learning in the IB Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS) program

CAS GOALS – DP2 Semester 1

  1. Creativity
    1. For this semester I hope to expand my creative outlets in order to maintain a balanced combination of school and hobbies. I specifically hope to go into artistic or simply creative activities with a different mindset each time – i.e. working on my mindfulness, social skills, or general mental wellbeing. As a more focused approach, I hope to explore baking further as a hobby and develop strong skills in both cooking and baking in preparation for living alone in university. Continuing on from a strong creative goal I had last year, I have been persisting with my driving lessons within Colombo and I am hoping to be able to develop these skills to become a more self-sufficient, independent person which again will help me with life after high school.
  2. Activity
    1. Though the idea of SAISA seems impossible considering the current global situation, continuing to train and strengthen my body is still something I see as valuable to myself regardless on whether sports competitions take place. I continue to workout, however I feel as though I have lost touch with playing football over the past view months. In order to practice my football skills again I hope to begin by working on my stamina by running more; eventually being able to get classmates together for scrimmages to practice my skill in a ‘match’ setting.
  3. Service
    1. As we dive into the new school year, I am hopeful that service will soon commence and I will be able to provide insightful topics of conversation to discuss for my group. I am in the group ‘Girls for Girls’ which focuses on working with women who have gone through trauma within Sri Lanka, and providing a safe space for them to share their stories – further giving them support for the future. Along with this, our service discusses issues of gender discrimination and works towards making OSC and the Sri Lankan society in general a more welcome place for empowered women. I hope to be able to try leading discussions and debates within my service, along with asserting my beliefs, strategies, & goals for future fundraisers & events – which canĀ  promote the message of Girls for Girls as well as raise money to further support the women we work with.

In terms of general goals I have for my CAS blog in itself, I am striving to strengthen my skills in ensuring that I incorporate the learning outcomes with everything that I do. I hope to be able to create strong reflections that not only depict my efforts when trying something new, but show that I understand how to grow from my experiences and make changes in future – which in itself is a key life skill to have, especially with the big change of adapting to university life. A specific learning outcome I feel I need to focus on more this semester would be evaluating the environmental and ethical implications of things that I do in order to be more conscious of the planet. Since I am involved in classes that strive to promote a more sustainable planet, I feel more inclined as well as more mentally prepared to take into account environmental factors when undergoing activities – which will aid me in creating good reflection on my judgements of choices I make along the way to better the planet. I.e. doing service activities like a beach clean up to insert myself into a more environmentally friendly hobby.
