SGA Campaign and Treasurer Responsibilities

This year my friends and I formed a cabinet, lead by Andrew and Azan, and decided to run for the SGA. After thinking about it, the position that I wanted to pursue was Treasurer. This is because math has always been my favorite subject since childhood; it has always been an enjoyable pastime of mine. We split up the positions among us based on our traits and strengths and I achieved my goal of Treasurer, which suited me perfectly.

During the process of campaigning, we tried multiple strategies to promote our cabinet and win the election. We made posters for promoting our ideals, campaigned on social media to appeal to a larger audience and we rallied our friends to spread word about us. When the time for the election came up, our entire cabinet was really nervous. After we received word that we had won the election, all of our nervousness disappeared and we were overjoyed.

Our first duties as SGA members were to have meeting with our supervisor, get to know ourselves and set the agenda for the upcoming meetings, and I did not have a massive role to play in those meetings. My only major jobs were to send a recording of my lines for the SGA video for the assembly and drafting an email to send to the business office regarding the budget for the school year. Time went by quickly and school had come to a temporary end, in the form of the winter break.

During the winter break, I did not do much and I had a lot of time to myself. I began thinking about the SGA and my role as treasurer. After a few minutes, I realised how important my role is and I gained greater insight into why I decided to run for this in the first place. The role of treasurer is crucial to the running of the SGA. Handling finances and fundraising allows the SGA to work smoothly without any worries about budget. Furthermore, having a part in the SGA allows me to help the school community in a time where morale is not the highest. SGA run events can help change that and knowing that I can help that cause, helps me take my role more seriously.

In terms of CAS, I believe that this activity will help me demonstrate how to initiate and plan for experiences. This is built into my role which requires planning for the future and sorting budget and finances for upcoming events. Furthermore, the SGA is a body which relies a lot on collaboration and effective communication, which helps me demonstrate the skills required to work collectively. Therefore, I believe that this will be a fun CAS experience that helps the school community in these troubling times.
